Kromfohrländer

Kromfohrlander

The Kromfohrländer is one of the newest German dog breeds and, despite its qualities, remains relatively unknown among dog lovers. It makes an excellent companion dog for both single people and families with children. However, it is important not to crowd it and to give it space to retreat. Potential owners should be able to provide it with sufficient exercise and mental stimulation. This also applies to seniors, who should be fit enough to meet its needs.

Kromfohrländer - Special characteristics

The Kromfohrländer is a dog breed originating in Germany and is recognized by the FCI . It belongs to Group 9 (companion and pet dogs). The Kromfohrländer's appearance is reminiscent of a terrier. The basic color of the coat is white, with light, red or dark brown markings. There are two different hair variants: wire-haired and smooth-haired. Both variants have a short, soft undercoat. Wire-haired Kromfohrländers also have a beard, and there are three hair lengths: wire-short, wire-medium and wire-long. The breed was created by crossing Fox Terriers and Grand Griffon Vendéen and is considered a so-called hybrid dog, in which two different dog breeds were deliberately mated with each other in order to combine positive characteristics. However, inbreeding has caused many health problems in Kromfohrländers. The ProKromfohrländer e. V. breeding association is trying to counteract this problem by including the robust Dansk-Svensk-Gardhund in breeding. The Kromfohrländer, affectionately known as the "Kromi," is a loyal and good-natured dog that forms a strong bond with its owner. They often tend to become a "one-man dog," but their friendly and playful nature also makes them well suited to families with children. Kromfohrländers are said to maintain their cheerfulness and playfulness well into old age.

Kromfohrländer - What should be considered regarding nutrition?

The Kromfohrländer's diet should be carefully planned, as many commercial dry and ready-made foods may not contain the best ingredients. Instead, it is recommended to give fresh, home-prepared food consisting of fresh meat, vegetables and grains. The ideal composition is usually 60 percent meat , 30 percent vegetables, 10 percent grains and some oil. The daily amount of food should be about 3 to 6 percent of the dog's body weight. It is important to take the dog's age into account when feeding, aspuppies , adult dogs and old dogs have different needs.

Kromfohrländer - Health and Care

The Kromfohrländer is characterized by its low grooming requirements. Unlike some other dogs, it does not have an unpleasant "dog smell" or odor of its own.The smooth-haired Kromfohrländer coat is relatively easy to groom and only requires occasional brushing. During the shedding period , when it loses more hair, brushing should be done more frequently. Smooth-haired dogs shed their coat twice a year. Grooming wire-haired Kromfohrländers is a little more complex, as it requires regular trimming. If you have no experience with this, it is advisable to ask the breeder or a dog club to show you how best to do this. Unlike smooth-haired dogs, wire-haired dogs do not shed their coats naturally, and the hair does not fall out on its own. Instead, the rough hair reaches its maximum length after about eight months and should then be trimmed.Neglecting trimming leads to a shaggy and matted coat, which is uncomfortable for the dog and can lead to itching . Trimming simply involves removing the dead top coat hair by hand to make room for new hair. This process is painless and it is advisable to get your dog used to it from a young age.

Kromfohrländer - Origin & History

The history of the Kromfohrländer began in 1945 in North Rhine-Westphalia near Siegen. An animal-loving woman named Ilse Schleifenbaum took in a stray male dog named Peter, probably a French Griffon Vendéen. Peter and a German Fox Terrier bitch named Fiffi had a litter of well-behaved puppies. Ilse Schleifenbaum recognized something special in the mixed breeds and began to deliberately crossbreed Fox Terriers and Grand Griffon Vendéen. These offspring eventually gave rise to the Kromfohrländer breed, which was officially recognized as a new German dog breed in 1955. The name "Kromfohrländer" goes back to the community of Krom Fohr, where the first breeder lived with the dogs Peter, Fiffi and their offspring.

Conclusion

The Smooth Collie is a breed characterized by its simplicity. The short coat requires only regular brushing, and baths are rarely necessary. This breed is ideal for people looking for a low-maintenance companion who is still active and playful.
