Sealyham Terrier - Special Characteristics

The Sealyham Terrier is a very small dog, measuring up to 32 cm in size. The dogs have a slightly domed skull that widens between the ears. The eyes are dark, well set, round and medium-sized. The eyebrows are bushy and spiky and the cheek hair is pronounced. This reinforces the impression of a flat head. The pure white or white coat with yellow-brown or badger-colored markings on the ear or head is dense, long, hard and wiry and has a weatherproof undercoat.

The small four-legged friends are very lively dogs and up for any kind of fun. With remarkable stamina and concentration, they are enthusiastic about any activity. Whether it's long walks , playing or romping with children. The Sealyham is definitely up for it! The small, intelligent dogs are fearless and intrepid. But with a little bit of dog sense and consistency, the Sealyham Terriers obey well. It should be noted that the dogs usually choose a main caregiver.

The Sealyham Terrier is an active and balanced dog. He is very friendly with children and pets. His fearless nature is evident when he defends his family and their property.

Sealyham Terrier - What should be considered regarding nutrition?

There are hardly any important rules when it comes to feeding Sealyham Terriers . As with any active dog, a balanced, healthy diet is the most important thing. The food should tend to be high in protein with a high meat content . It doesn't matter whether it's dry or wet food . Like any dog, your Sealyham Terrier can of course have certain preferences. In general, because of its active nature, it needs more food than an older Sealyham Terrier - but of course you should avoid overfeeding in any case. You can get special low-calorie dog food from pet stores. Otherwise, feeding the Sealyham Terrier is no problem.

Sealyham Terrier - Health and Care

When caring for the Sealyham Terrier, special attention should be paid to the coat. Regular brushing of the long, wiry hair and especially the undercoat should not be neglected to prevent matting. The little one should also be checked for vermin. The coat should also be trimmed about twice a year. It is particularly important to make sure that the animals can see properly in the facial area.

The long, rough top coat lies over a soft, weatherproof undercoat. The double coat makes your Sealyham Terrier's fur dirt-repellent, robust and resilient. This reduces the amount of grooming required enormously.

In addition, the eyes, ears and claws should be checked. The claws should be trimmed regularly. But be careful! Trimming the claws must be done professionally and should only be done if you know what you are doing.

Sealyham Terrier - Origin & History

The Sealyham Terrier first appeared in the 19th century and was initially used primarily in Great Britain as a hunting dog for small animals. Captain John Edwards was looking for the perfect dog for hunting small animals. He probably crossed Fox Terriers, Welsh Corgis, Bull Terriers and Dandie Dinmont Terriers, but no one knows for sure. The dogs, which were still of various colors at the time, were officially recognized by the Kennel Club for the first time in 1911. The first breed standard was created a year earlier. The breed is recognized by the FCI . Particularly popular at the turn of the century, the dogs are becoming increasingly rare today. Today, only a few dozen puppies are born in Germany each year!

Sealyham Terrier - The right accessories

The Sealyham Terrier loves to romp and play and is the perfect dog to try out all kinds of dog toys. The little one also enjoys going to dog school or play dates. The cuddly four-legged friends are great to keep in the apartment and love to doze on the arm of an armchair or sofa. Make him happy with a cuddly basket and, if possible, place it in a raised place so that the little one can see what is going on. You will see: the cute ball of wool prefers to stay there than anywhere else in his refuge.

Conclusion

The Sealyham Terrier is a small, fearless dog with a friendly nature that was bred as a hunting dog. Its care requires regular brushing and trimming. As a companion, it needs toys and a comfortable basket. The breed has a long history, but is rarely seen today.
