The Elo, a dog breed from Germany, has only existed for a relatively short time. Breeding began in 1987 in Dedelstorf, Lower Saxony, by a couple who bred Eurasiers and Bobtails. Their goal was to create a family-friendly dog with no strong hunting instinct and that also barked little. They initially called the breed "Eloschaboro". To develop the Elo, they crossed Eurasiers, Bobtails, as well as Chow Chows, Samoyeds, German Spitz, Japanese Spitz, Dalmatians, Miniature Spitz, Pekingese and Medium Spitz. The focus was on health and temperament, not coat color.The name "Elo" is derived from the first letters of the Eurasier, Bobtail and the middle vowel of Chow Chow breeds, as these breeds were the first to be used for Elo breeding. Breeders Marita and Heinz Szobries registered the "Elo" brand, which they owned in Switzerland and the EU. The "Elo® Breeding and Research Association" in Braunschweig has existed since 1993, and since then more than 13,000 Elos have been born. There are 130 breeders in Germany, the Netherlands, Austria, Switzerland and Belgium.
