He is rather reserved around strangers, but feels most comfortable with meaningful activities. Thanks to his versatile skills, the Curly Coated Retriever is happy in a variety of activities, be it dummy training, retrieving , tracking or herding sheep. He is willing to work and spirited outside, but at home he is affectionate and in need of love when he is busy enough. However, compared to Labradors or Golden Retrievers, he will not fulfill all of his owners' wishes because he retains a certain independence despite his sensitivity.
Curly Coated Retriever - What should you consider when feeding them?
A balanced diet plays a crucial role in the well-being and health of the Curly Coated Retriever. A correct diet is essential to prevent obesity and the associated health problems such as heart and kidney problems or joint problems. Due to its tendency to be overweight, it is very important to adjust the amount of food according to the dog's age, size and activity level. By dividing the food into two meals a day and limiting dog treats , weight can be well controlled. In addition, the food should take into account the dog's specific energy and nutrient requirements depending on its life stage. A diet tailored to needs not only helps prevent obesity, but also promotes a healthy and shiny coat and healthy skin.

Curly Coated Retriever - Health and Care
Grooming the Curly Coated Retriever is extremely straightforward, as its water-resistant and robust coat does not require regular brushing. Regular swimming is the best way to care for its coat, and occasional massaging in circular motions while drying helps maintain its curls. Shedding is normal and does not usually require clipping or the use of dog shampoo.
Curly Coated Retriever - Origin & History
The Curly Coated Retriever is a rare breed of hunting dog and is often kept as a family pet today. It has a long history and is considered the oldest of the retriever breeds. The origins of this breed are traced back to the English Waterdog, as indicated by its curly coat, intelligence and love of water. Later, St. John's Newfoundland, Setter, Pointer, Poodle and Irish Water Spaniel breeds were probably crossed to develop it further. In 1854, the Curly Coated Retriever was recognized by the English Kennel Club and first shown at a show. The first breed club was formed in 1890 and the breed has changed little since then. There are about 4,000 dogs of this breed worldwide, with it being most common in Northern Europe and becoming increasingly popular in other parts of Europe.
Curly Coated Retriever - The right accessories
Of course, the Curly Coated Retriever needs a few things to live a happy and healthy life. These include food bowls for his meals and a comfortable dog bed to retreat to. In terms of grooming, a few towels are enough, as his curly coat does not require regular brushing. To keep your Curly Coated Retriever busy and happy, you should also get him toys that are good for games of fetch. Dummy training and nose work are also great ways to challenge him mentally and physically.
Curly Coated Retriever – Conclusion
Characterized by its curly, water-resistant coat and requiring minimal grooming, the Curly Coated Retriever is an intelligent and water-loving companion that fits well into families.
