Ariégeois - Special characteristics
As already mentioned, the Ariégeois looks very similar to the Braque de l'Ariège. Its short fur is usually white with black spots. Its floppy ears hang down particularly far. Its lips, however, do not. With a height of 57 cm at the withers and a weight of 28 kilograms, it is still a medium-sized dog breed.
The Ariégeois was bred primarily as a hunting dog , although it is often kept in packs for hunting. This makes it very sociable with other dogs.
Ariégeois - What should be considered regarding nutrition?
A dog that loves to run like the Ariégeois needs performance food with a high nutrient and mineral content. At the same time, obesity should be avoided. Its ideal weight can be seen in the rear ribs. These should still be visible. Additional weighing will give you a better overview. When choosing dog food, you should make sure that it does not contain sugar, flavor enhancers or too much grain. It is not so important whether it is dry or wet food . However, remember that wet food contains significantly more liquid, and this is important. It is best to always have a separate water bowl available. With healthy chews, you can not only make your dog happy, but also do something for its dental health. However, treats should generally be used sparingly.
Ariégeois - Health and Care
Ariégeois are very easy-care dogs. Their coat only needs a little attention when it is shedding, but a little brushing is the most important thing. Floppy ears always need some care and cleaning, as the lack of fresh air can quickly lead to inflammation.
The most important care for this breed of dog is exercise itself. Without it, these animals will die. To keep the Ariégeois healthy and fit, long walks are a must. In addition, if he is not kept as a hunting dog, it can't hurt to offer him dog sports. He particularly enjoys tracking work.
Delicious chews for your loyal companion now available!
Since this breed of dog particularly enjoys tracking, appropriate dog toys are a good choice. But retrieving toys are also popular with them. But you will surely find the right one over time.
Ariégeois - Origin & History
Ariégeois originate from the south of France, where they were bred for hunting hares. Their ancestors can be found in various medium-sized hunting dogs, the so-called Briquets, as well as the large hunting dogs Grand Bleu de Gascogne and the Grade Gascon Saintongeois.
One reason why it is not very widespread is probably due to the fact that it almost became extinct about 100 years ago. It was not until the 1970s that the Ariégeois population began to increase again.
Ariégeois - The right accessories
The most important "accessory" for a running dog like the Ariégeois is the possibility to let it run "free". It is almost a basic requirement to have your own garden, which is also well secured with a dog fence .
In addition, keeping an Ariégeois requires a collar or harness , various leashes, food and water bowls, a dog bed and a transport box for car journeys. In many places, all dogs travelling by train are required to wear a muzzle.
Conclusion
This active and intelligent dog is a great choice for anyone who has enough space and prefers to be outside rather than sitting on the sofa. Since it is considered easy to train, it is also interesting for those new to dogs, and its child-friendly nature makes it a good family dog.
