Boston Terrier - Special Characteristics
The Boston Terrier is a small but agile and muscular animal with a great need for movement. It has a short, pressed-in snout, large, pointed ears and short, smooth fur. Its button eyes can melt any heart. Its color is either brindle or black and white spotted. The black fur often has a reddish sheen and is called seal-colored.
The small terrier from the east coast of the USA is a very friendly and people-oriented animal. With healthy socialization and loving training, the dog is an excellent companion dog that also gets on well with children. The dogs have a guarding instinct and can protect their territory from intruders without being aggressive. Their playful nature is really fun and can make you forget the time. The dogs are considered sensitive creatures that can adapt well to the mood of the people around them.
Even if the dog can be kept in a city apartment, the little four-legged friend definitely needs to get plenty of exercise every day. Dog sports such as obedience or agility are a lot of fun for the little dogs and also offer the opportunity to get to know other dog owners better and to talk about their pet. There are also Boston Terriers who have completed training as therapy dogs .
Boston Terrier - What should you consider when feeding them?
When feeding a Boston Terrier, it is important to ensure that the protein content of the food is not too high. It is also important to have a balanced diet and food that your little companion enjoys eating. Make sure that the food has a high meat content and does not contain any unnecessary additives or fattening agents.
A high-quality and natural dog food should therefore contain all the important nutrients according to the dog's age. Since Boston Terriers should not be overweight, it is important to monitor the weight and calorie intake of the dogs. Obesity can have serious consequences for the physical structure of the dogs. An optimal diet consists of 60% fresh meat and 40% vegetables, rice and fruit. Dry or wet food is of course suitable. But BARFing (biologically appropriate raw feeding) is also a suitable feeding method.
Treats should also be used in moderation. It is also advisable not to give your dog table scraps, as this has a negative impact on the training and health of your four-legged friend. You can find out which foods are right for your dog using online guides or relevant literature.

Boston Terrier - Health and Care
Caring for a Boston Terrier is very straightforward. The coat should be brushed and combed once a week. Regular checks of the eyes, ears and claws are also part of the care program. Many Boston Terriers have severe breathing problems, which are the result of overbreeding and the resulting narrowed snout. You should therefore not expect the dogs to do too much exercise. So-called cruel breeding is still practiced today, even though many breeders are trying to counteract this development. Talk to the breeder of your choice carefully and get a certificate of the health of the parents. As with all dogs, a healthy diet and sufficient exercise is the best care for your four-legged friend.
Boston Terrier - The right accessories
A Boston Terrier is a very playful animal and has a lot of energy at its disposal. You can motivate them well with treats and conjure up the odd trick. Most accessories for medium-sized dogs are suitable as accessories. In winter, it may be advisable to get a suitable winter coat to prevent colds. When buying treats , you should also choose a low-energy option. A sturdy harness is preferable to a collar to protect the terrier's neck.
Boston Terrier - Origin & History
Even if its name gives the impression that the Boston Terrier is a terrier, this is incorrect. The dog from the US city of Boston was bred in the 1870s and is a mastiff-type dog. The breed includes the now extinct English Terriers, English Bulldogs and French Bulldogs. In 1878 the dogs were first exhibited at a dog show in Boston. The name "Boston Terrier" goes back to the American Kennel Club and was coined in 1893. The dogs were among the most popular dogs on the North American continent until the middle of the 20th century. The breed only made it to Europe in the late 1920s and is still relatively rare today. In Germany, several hundred of the small mastiff-type dogs are born every year. The Boston Terrier is the official animal of the US state of Massachusetts in New England.
